We had the best time at the Franklin Institute! It is unbelievable how much we learned about volcanoes, Pompeii, hearts, electricity, the Earth, flight, and trains! What did your child like best? I heard from a lot of students that they liked everything!! Once again, I feel so lucky to teach at Woodbury Heights, because the students were very well-behaved today! They are the best! A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Tursi and Mrs. Grassia for also coming along.
We also had four full days of learning as well! In LAL we have been studying about flight, which worked perfect with the one exhibit at the Franklin Institute. What an interesting story we read about the Wright Brothers!! Even though they only flew for 12 seconds, we know it was a big accomplishment! I showed the students the National Park for the Wright Brothers in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. It looks like a neat place to visit. Our comprehension skills included identifying cause and effect and rereading. We also had a class discussion about homophones and r-controlled vowels. Another interesting story about hot air balloons took place in our backyard. The first North American hot air balloon flight landed in Deptford. Some students were not aware of this! We learned that the man who flew in the balloon even carried a letter from George Washington! So cool!
In writing, we continued to prepare for the NJ ASK. We completed a class rubric to follow as we write. I then timed the students for 25 minutes to see if they could plan and write a story based on a picture, during that time. The students used their creative juices to write some interesting stories. I know that with lots of practice, they will be ready for the NJ ASK in May.
Please continue to practice the multiplication facts! What an improvement I have seen in the students!!!
