Although we had a short week, we packed a lot into this week!
LAL: We have begun a new theme titled: What is Light? So far, we have read about Snowflake Bentley, a man who loved snow and figured out how to take pictures of snowflakes! You can "google" his name and you will discover some of his photographs! They are beautiful! The class has been introduced to some light vocabulary including monitor, pattern, projected, beam, and absorption. Try and use these words in everyday conversation!
This week, we also practiced a "comprehension packet." From now on, the third graders will be receiving this as their homework. There is a story to read, multiple choice questions, and written responses. Students are to highlight where they find the answers. A letter stating the directions will be sent home on Monday with the packet.
Adverbs!! Ahh! Third grade has been working on multiple parts of speech. This week, we included adverbs. The adverbs that we focused on mainly dealt with describing a verb, telling how, when, or where. For example: She neatly colored in the picture. Neatly=adverb; Colored=verb. This was the easiest way to start introducing adverbs, which is a difficult concept to sometimes understand.
Math: We continued to work with decimals and the Unit 5 assessment will be given on Monday, January 7th.
Science: Inquiry groups continued! We have wrapped up our inquiry and are now moving onto how to narrow down all the information we have gathered! The groups will also be deciding how they would like to present their information.
Please don't forget that students will be going OUTSIDE for recess almost everyday. Students should bring in hats, gloves, and winter coats. Also, our classroom tends to get very warm, even in the winter. Layers are the key!
