Hello February!

This week we read some interesting stories about animals and their adaptations.  Gray Wolf and Red Fox gave us facts about how these two animals have adapted to their environment.  The animals have changed so that they are able to survive.  We also learned about the Mojave Desert, where animals survive in the dry heat.  These animals were so interesting because they are able to travel far distances to get water.  Our skills included comparing and contrasting, identifying prefixes, and using context clues to help determine the meaning of a word.  The students did very well on their reading test, which is coming home on Friday.  These need to be signed and returned.

We continued to discuss telling time and now moved onto elapsed time.  This can be difficult at times, but most of us "got it."  Our next lessons discussed AM and PM, as well as determining how to measure volume, using milliliters and liters.  We looked at pictures of certain items and then decided whether we would measure them with mL or L.  The students completed their classwork and homework in school, but it was difficult for some.
In social studies we began to learn about people who helped to change their community.  Our textbook has stories about Ruby Bridges, Cesar Chavez, as well as two others who are less well-known, Lois Marie Gibbs and Judy Heumann.  All of them helped fix a problem in their community.  We combined this with our ACE writing strategy.  The students wrote about how Harriet Tubman helped to change her community and then answered questions about it.
