Last Week of January

Can you believe that January has already come and gone?  The students have been hard at work, especially in division.  I sent home the unit test on Friday.  Be sure to sign and return it.  We now started discussing telling time on an analog clock.  It is important that students understand how to read the time, because next we start on elapsed time.  Keep practicing at home!  Try to encourage your child to tell you the time on the analog clock, instead of a digital clock.

"How can our talents and skills help someone else?" This was our essential question.  We read about children who helped others with their talent.  These children didn't even know that they had a talent, until they helped someone else!  Our comprehension strategy was to determine the point of view of the narrator.  This can be challenging, but we worked together to find the point of view.  We continued to learn how prefixes work and identify the root word and prefix.

In writing, we learned a new strategy for answering questions about our writing, the ACE strategy.  Students identified that they needed to restate and answer the question first!  Next, students need to cite evidence from the text and can use specific sentence starters.  Last, students must expand their answer.  We will continue this next week.  It will really help students for the reading assessments, as well as the PARCC test.

Our thermometer experiment didn't go as planned, but some students had success with it!  I sent home the supplies that are needed.  The students tried to make the thermometer go up when the water bottle was placed in warm water.  You may try this experiment at home and then show the rest of the class how you did it!

Valentine's Boxes are due on Friday, February 5th.  Please send in a wrapped cereal box and we will decorate it in class!  Thank you!
