Week of 1-11-16

This month, we are celebrating Unity Month. The students wrote about how we can be a united class and the good choices we can make.  We read about Martin Luther King and how he tried to unite people, peacefully!  The students made doves with their hand prints to complete their project.  On Friday, we had a little assembly where we created a school-wide rainbow!  We took a picture and can't wait to see it!

In writing, the students began to write a commercial for a non-fiction book. The commercial must include a title, opening, argument, and a strong closing.  We had a discussion about what each of these means and how to write our very best!  The students wrote a paragraph about the book and then designed a cover for the book.  Next week, we will record our commercials and watch them!  How fun!

We ended Unit 3 with an interesting week about history, specifically the pioneers going to Oregon and Homesteaders on the Great Plains (think Little House on the Prairie).  We learned so much information about these people and how they changed America.  We worked a lot with sequencing and suffixes!  The students took a reading test on Friday, which will be returned next week.
