Our week started out wonderful with honoring the Veterans at our special sign language presentation on Tuesday! I hope that you enjoyed watching your children as much as I did! The students were so serious when it came to honoring our Veterans. Thank you to all who attended. Later on in the week, Mrs. Burgin had the opportunity to tell us about her visit to the VA Hospital. Her family and the Veterans appreciated all our donations. They were able to hand out 75 care packages to the Veterans! She explained to us about the party they had and how special it was that our third grade class was able to help out. Thank you! :-)
This entire week we discussed immigration and why people immigrate to a new country. We read about a family who sailed to America from Ireland in "Sailing to America." This family immigrated because there wasn't enough food in Ireland and it was hard to find work. Another book told the story of how a little girl's grandmother and grandfather immigrated to the United States. Does your child remember why they immigrated from Russia? In language arts, we also learned the difference between singular and plural nouns. Sometimes plural nouns need an s, es, or even an ies! We learned plenty of new vocabulary words and continued to discuss theme and main idea. The third graders learned how to identify similies and even wrote their own about Thanksgiving or a turkey! Don't forget, your student can visit the class Wonders website from our school website or from this link:

In science, we continued our unit on Global Changes. We had a class discussion about why a temperature might change. We discussed the terms control, variable, and hypothesis. The class tried a few variables to see if it made the temperature change. We tried cold and hot water and put the thermometer near the window! The temperature did change in each place.
We had a fun and fantastic week! I can't believe how much we have learned in this first marking period of third grade. I look forward to seeing how much the students continue to grow! :-)
