Exciting times at WHES!

Our exciting adventure of this week was participating in an assembly with a real author and illustrator...Lee Harper!  Mr. Harper taught us about his life and how he decided to become an illustrator.  The best part of the assembly was when Mr. Harper helped us draw some cool animals!!!  We drew a hamster, turkey, and a sheep.  Did you get to see some of our drawings?  I will be hanging the hamster drawings outside the classroom!

Hmmm..why did we draw hamsters!??!?!  Well, our special activity "One School, One Book" began!  The book is The World According to Humphrey.  Humphrey is the cutest little hamster who tells us about his life while in an elementary school classroom.  We just started the book and the students love it so far.  In the upcoming weeks, we will be meeting with Miss Harkins' class to do some special activities.

How do people from different cultures contribute to a community?  This was our essential question for the week.  We read about Faith Ringgold who created quilts and books about her culture.  "Room to Grow" was a story about a girl who moved from the country to the city.  The family did not have lots of room to have a garden but they created the garden in their house.  This inspired them to help create a city garden.  We focused on sequencing, compound words, and the features of biographies.

In Math, we began Unit 2.  This unit focuses on addition and subtraction facts.  However, please continue to study multiplication and division facts at home.

North, south, east, and west!  We began studying about directions and learned the cardinal and intermediate directions!  We even made our own compass rose!

Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!  :-)  Don't forget about Week of Respect next week!
