Busy 4 day week!

Our week was filled from beginning to end!!!  We began by starting a new week in our Wonders program.   This week, our essential question was "What can traditions teach you about cultures?"  We read a short story about Hawaiian culture and their tradition of the Aloha Festival.  Our main story for this week was The Dream Catcher.  Peter, the main character, was very worried about having to make a presentation for his class about a family tradition.  His grandmother helped him with thinking of a tradition.  We discussed characteristics of realistic fiction and sequencing.  Our job was to fill out a graphic organizer listing the beginning, middle, and end.  We also had a conversation about how context clues help us figure out the meaning of a word we may not know.  The students are very interested in all the stories we have read and I look forward to learning and reading even more!!

In Social Studies, we practiced for our quiz by playing a game on the iPads.  We had to locate the continents and oceans on a map.  The students must have been studying hard, as they all did wonderful on the quiz!  Please sign and return these as soon as possible.

Global Changes...our first science unit has begun!  We did a little experiment with water erosion.  I poured water on soil and we observed what happened to the soil.  We noticed that the soil was moving, especially when lots of water was poured!  Erosion will be our main topic these first few weeks.  Do you see erosion in your everyday life?  Be on the look out!

We wrapped up Unit 1 in math and took our first test.  These will come home next week and should be signed and returned as well.  At the end of each unit, a study guide will come home as it did on Wednesday night.  Please look over this with your child to be sure they feel confident during the test.

Finally, we have mostly finished our MAP Assessment in the computer lab. The students gave 100% effort during these assessments.  I will use these results to drive my instruction to help students become the best they can be!  I will also be happy to share the results with you at conferences in November.

I hope you enjoy your weekend!  Don't forget...book orders are due on Monday.  There is a link on the right hand side of this blog that will take you directly to the class ordering website.  Thank you in advance!
