4 Day Work Week!

We sure do know how to pack it all in to four days!!!  We started Week 5 of our Wonders Program.  This week, our essential question was "How can problem solving lead to new ideas?" We read about Chester Greenwood who invented earmuffs!  His ears were cold one winter in Maine, so he needed to solve his problem!  Next, the story we read was about Mary Anderson, who invented the windshield wiper.  Her story was very interesting...ask your child about her!  Finally, we read about Elijah McCoy, who invented the "Real McCoy," an oil cup for the wheels of a train.  The students loved all the stories!  We also discussed metaphors, asking questions about the story, and cause and effect.  The students worked diligently on new vocabulary words and identifying the subject and predicate of a sentence.  Click on this link to see our favorite song about parts of a sentence!

Science was very exciting this week!  We learned the four layers of the Earth, inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust.  The best part was we had the opportunity to make our own Earth model. The next day, we even got to see a volcano erupt!  Wow!!!  We now understand that this is what happens inside of the Earth.

In writing, we wrote our own biographies.  Ask your child what their biography is about.  The students had the opportunity to pick their own person!  The students did a wonderful job researching the person and then creating a three paragraph essay on them.  Wait until you read them!!!

Finally, we discussed Respect Week.  We finished up the week with a fun activity called "I 'mustache' you....how do you show respect?"  Students each wore their own mustache and then wrote an answer to the question.  We had fun, but also had the chance to learn more about respect week.
