Week of September 14th

We had a successful full week of school!  The students and I are working very hard to get a good routine going and fitting in everything that needs to be done!  Third graders need to accomplish multiple things throughout the school day.  In language arts, we began to read stories about traditions and cultures and what they can teach us.  We read about a boy who learned about his Native American culture which then helped him to make a presentation in school.  The students had multiple discussions about the genre realistic fiction and what exactly it is!  Our comprehension strategy this week focused on recalling the sequence of events in a story, as well as visualizing.  We also learned the difference between a command and exclamation sentence!  They are very different.  We are continuing to write friendly letters, as you saw at Back to School Night.  The students took their first reading test, which will come home this week to be signed and returned.

In math, we continue to discuss place value.  Our newest concept was rounding to the nearest 10 or nearest 100.  The students learned multiple ways to remember which way to round.  4 and below, let it go.  5 and above, give it a shove! On Monday, we will have a short math quiz on rounding.  Keep practicing your multiplication facts, because I have students who are moving along and learning them very quickly!

Continents and oceans continue to be our focus in Social Studies.  The students learned the location of the 7 continents and 4 biggest oceans.  We had the chance to label them on a map, which came home.  Next week, we will look at North America and what countries make up North America.  There will eventually be a test on the locations of the continents and oceans.

Thank you to everyone that was able to attend Back to School Night!  It was a pleasure meeting you all and I appreciate that you were able to make it.  Thanks again! :-)
