Landmarks and Monuments

In Language Arts this week, we learned so much about important landmarks in America.  Our stories included stories about the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and the National Mall.  Many students did not know much about the National Mall so it was interesting to read about it and learn about the people who are honored there.  The comprehension strategies included asking questions about our reading and identifying the main idea and details in sections of an expository text.

Our writing included some science and writing.  I read an interesting book about bats and the students took notes.  Their job was to write a minimum of 7 facts that they learned about bats.  Next, we read "Diary of a Spider," because we wrote "Diary of a Bat."  The students wrote two diary entries and had to include 3 facts per entry.  We then made a bat to staple the diary entries into.  The students wrote about bats going to school and even making friends with other bats!  It was a fun writing activity.

In science, we continued to discuss erosion.  However, we learned two new terms, weathering and deposition.  We made a foldable with the three terms and will continue to determine the difference between erosion, weathering, and deposition.

We continue to read and learn more about Patricia Polacco!  This week, we read The Graves.  It was an interesting story about a family that moves into town, but this isn't just any "normal" family.  However, Seth and Sara are very nice to this family, while others in the town are not.  It was not only a spooky story, but included treating others kindly even though they are different than you. Next week, we are going to read a fun book with a fun activity!
