Let me first thank all the parents that attended Back to School Night. We had 100% attendance, which definitely says something about the parents of my students! Thank you for also filling out that paperwork and being so kind!
Next, we had a busy, busy week in third grade. The students worked very hard on all assignments that were given. In Language Arts, we began to learn the different routines of the Wonders program. The students read a fiction and non-fiction text about meerkats. We discovered that all meerkats jobs in their group. One of our favorite jobs was the look-out meerkat who would signal the others if there was danger. The students also wrote an informational paragraph about their favorite animal. They included 5 facts about the animal. Boy, they sure do know ALOT about animals! We also set up a vocabulary notebook, writer's notebook, and our binders. The vocabulary notebook will include our vocabulary words for the week and also the vocabulary word that your child will be responsible for introducing. The writer's notebook will be used during writing time and also during Daily 5. That was also something new we set up in the classroom. Daily 5 will consist of Work on Writing, Word Work, Read to Self, and Read to Someone (right now a daily 4). I am working on getting the Listen to Reading set up. The students used this in second grade and are very familiar with the process.
In Math, we continued to review some second grade concepts. We reviewed telling time, measuring, using a calculator, and name-collection boxes. The students also had the opportunity to play Addition and Subtraction Top-It and Target Number. These are both easy games that can be played at home. Ask your child about these two games. Once again, math homework will come home each night.
We began to learn the location of the four hemispheres, 7 continents, and 4 major oceans. The students labeled a map and also had the chance to match the names on the STARboard. Sometime next week, look for a study guide to come home with the date of the quiz.
