Water Cycle..complete!

We started the week off right with a successful water cycle quiz!  Thank you to all families for the hard work or studying!  It paid off!  We have now moved onto the three main types of clouds; cirrus, stratus, cumulus.  The students worked in small groups to create large clouds and researched two facts about one cloud type.  Keep on the lookout in the sky for these clouds!

In social studies, we continued to discuss global trade.  We found items in the classroom and looked where they were made.  Many items came from Asian countries.  We found our hats, shirts, books, pencil cases, and folders came mostly from Asian countries.  It was decided that these countries make these items because it is cheaper to make them there.  How interesting, but we did decide that we wish more things came from America!!

In Language Arts, we began Theme 10 in Lit by Design.  This theme is titled "Money Matters."  We began discussing how money is used and read My Rows and Piles of Coins, about a young boy who saved all his money to buy a bike.  A few group discussions were also held about author's purpose.  Why did the author write this story?  We found three main reasons; to inform, persuade, or entertain!  We worked to read short stories and determined the author's purpose by filling out a graphic organizer.

We continued to practice our NJ ASK writing, by looking at a prompt and writing for a solid 30 minutes.  The students know that some of that time is for planning so that their story is organized.  When writing, students are focusing on good beginnings and endings, details, and taking a risk!  In spelling, we worked with idioms!  Has your child come home and said one?  We made a list of many of the ones we could think of!  We then illustrated the literal meaning and wrote what the idiom really means.  Some of the pictures turned out really funny!

Please see our PROJECT UPDATES tab so you are up to date on everything that is due in the coming weeks!  Spring is a busy time in third grade! :-)
