Week of October 19th

We wrapped up our week of folktales and have moved onto historical fiction!  This week our essential question was "Why do people immigrate to new places?"  Sailing to America told us of a family that immigrated from Ireland to America in the late 1890s.  In this story, we looked a similes, as well as the theme or message that the author is telling us.  The students continue to work diligently on their Daily 5.  They need to complete all assignments in order to earn an "A."  The students then have the opportunity for extra credit work, which they enjoy once they get to it!  Look for Daily 5 grades to come home once a week.

We continued writing personal narratives and focused on adding sequence words.  The students wrote a final, good copy and drew a picture to go along with it.  Next, students wrote a short persuasive letter.  They pretended to be a pumpkin in the pumpkin patch!  In the letter, they had to convince me if they wanted to become a Jack-o-Lantern or not!  The letters are so funny!!  There were some creative reasons why they should NOT become a Jack-o-Lantern!

In math, our place value unit concluded with a unit test!  I will grade them and send them home next week.  We now move onto multiplication!  Most of the students have some idea about how to solve multiplication problems, which will be helpful for this unit!

The Halloween Celebration is on Friday.  The parade begins at 1:45 outside!  I know the students will be so excited for it!
