Book Buddy Fun!

This week, we had the opportunity to meet with our book buddies, Mrs. Bennett's class!  Both the third graders and kindergartners had so much fun. Each child was able to paint a picture of Ivan.  Next, the students read a book together!  Next week, students will cut out and glue Ivan together and draw a background for Ivan.  It was great!

In language arts, we read about landmarks and monuments throughout the United States.  Our two main stories were about the Grand Canyon and Mount Rushmore.  Wow!  We learned so many interesting facts about these two important places in America.  I think that all of us would like to visit them someday!  We focused on the comprehension strategy of identifying the main idea and key details in a section from each story.  The students and I also had a discussion about multiple meaning words.  The word "bat" was in the Grand Canyon story and we identified that this "bat" was the animal.  It may be something that students don't think of often, but it is an important strategy to know.  Next week, we will take a reading assessment on these strategies.

We continued with subtraction, including subtracting three digit numbers and determining when we had regroup or trade.  With lots of practice, we continue to improve on this skill.  The multiplication and division timed tests did come home.  As you saw, students need to be working on this in order to achieve a higher score.

The students did a tremendous job on their continents and ocean quiz!  I am very proud of the students as I can see that they worked hard to study this information.

Have a great long weekend!  :-)
