Week of 1-13

How can one person change the way you think?  This was our essential questions, which fit in perfectly the week before Martin Luther King Day!  We read interesting stories about Roberto Clemente, Abraham Lincoln, Jackie Robinson, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Madam CJ Walker.  It was very interesting to learn how these people lived and the things that they found important.  In each of our stories, a person from history influenced a character in our story to think different.  We focused on visualizing, cause and effect, historical fiction, and idioms!  The students also took the second round of the MAP Assessment in the computer lab.  There were three sections, math, language, and reading.

In Math, we continued our unit on geometry.  All types of shapes were introduced in a brand new way!  We learned about the prefixes for shapes and that they mean how many sides a shape has!  The students made polygons with straws and twist-ties.  It was a lot of fun to think about shapes more in-depth than the students had previously.  The students have been working very hard in math!

We created peace doves in honor of Martin Luther King.  Each student wrote their own peace poem about what peace looks like and sounds like.  In social studies, we learned about the public services that Woodbury Heights provides.  Some of the public services are free, while others cost money for the families of Woodbury Heights.  In learning about the public services, we listened to the sounds of these public services and the students guessed which sound was playing!

The third graders continue to try their hardest and do their best work.  Many students this week earned a lot of money this week for completing their Daily 5 work, as well as their homework.
