Week of 11-12

November is moving rapidly as we get busier and busier in third grade!  In Language Arts this week, we read a nonfiction book titled Fossils.  We learned interesting facts about fossils and noticed the features of a nonfiction book.  This one included a contents page, timelines, questions, and a glossary.  In spelling we reviewed homophones and make a homophones matching game.  Ask your child about it!  Mrs. Miller taught us about limericks and we each wrote our own turkey limerick.  When you come to school for conferences, be sure to check our your child's hanging in the hallway.

In social studies, we began doing some research on the Lenni Lenape Native Americans, who lived right in our backyard!  We decided that we would focus on the Lenape culture, which includes food, clothing, shelter, holidays, language, and family dynamic.  Our class learned some interesting facts about family dynamics within the Lenape tribe.  The mother raises the children and the father is not a close relative.  Instead, the mother's brother or the grandfather helps to raise the children.  Your children were very interested in this, so please ask them about it.

In math, we continue to work on multiplication and division concepts.  You can continue to practice these facts at home.  I know that the practice paper has not been sent home for homework recently, but this will start again during the last week of November.  The class will be taking another timed test for multiplication and division and I am excited to see how they have grown from the last time.

Once again, thank you to all who attended the Veterans Day celebration.  Don't forget, we are collecting baby items for Hurricane Sandy victims.  I look forward to next week with your child and I hope you and your family enjoy your Thanksgiving! My son will be turning one over that break and I am so excited!
