Welcome 2014!!

2014 is here and boy has it been cold!  We have been keeping warm and busy upstairs in Room 208.  In Language Arts, we read about the features that make animals unique.  The stories were all folktales and the third graders have become folktale experts!  They know exactly what makes a folktale, a folktale! "Inchworm's Tale" told us how an inchworm saved two children in a Native American culture.  My personal favorite was "Martina, the Beautiful Cockroach" about a cockroach who is looking for a husband.  It was very funny.  If you have a chance, ask your child to log in to Wonders and search for the book to listen to.  We took our weekly assessment, which will come home next week.

In Math, we finished Unit 5 and took another assessment, which will also come home next week.  Unit 6 begins a geometry unit!  The third graders have already made a chart to help them remember lines, line segments, and rays.  We made these all out of q-tips and cotton balls.

We have also begun an inquiry project in science.  The students are broken up into 3 groups, each researching a different topic.  The topics include Pompeii, Types of Rocks, and Clouds.  First, the students wrote rules that their groups will follow.  Next, they begun discussing and researching their topic.  The groups looked in books, as well as some Internet information.  Coming next week, students will research even more and start to think about how they will present their topics.  I think we are going to learn a lot and have fun on the way.

Please remember that the reading and division logs are due on Friday of each week.  When it is turned in, students earn money from me.  However, when not turned in, students lose money.  Thank you in advance.  Have a great rest of the weekend!!!!
