Week of 10-8

For a four day week, we sure fit in A LOT!  First thing, you should be very proud of your children.  They cashed in their money to earn a class party, instead of earning their own money for individual rewards!  On Friday, we watched Madagascar and ate popsicles and doughnuts!  What a treat and a great way to spend a Friday afternoon.

Language Arts:  This week we read Tell Me a Story.  This is a historical fiction book about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory.  Ask your child about it.  They seemed very interested and we will continue to discuss this next week.  We read some other historical fiction books about the early 1900s and immigrants.

We started a big undertaking of writing our very own novels.  I began to read The Mouse and the Motorcycle to give students an understanding of exactly what a novel is.  A novel is different from picture books, which is the type of story we are used to writing.  Our goal is to have completed a "mini" novel by the end of October and publish it sometime in November.

Social Studies:  This week was Fire Safety Week.  Two firefighters came on Tuesday and we discussed some interesting facts in class.  With these facts, your child created a news report with a partner.  They each had certain criteria that they had to meet.  The students were given time to write the news report and practice reading it aloud.  Next, they showed the class their report.  They took this project seriously and when I send home the rubric, you will see that their effort paid off!

Science:  We continued to discuss volcanos.  With Mrs. Gallinaro's class, we wrote facts and questions about volcanos.  Be sure to check it out in the hallway if you are able to come for Parent Visitation Day on Wednesday. Next week, keep your eye out for a study guide on volcanos and the layers of the Earth.

Don't forget that Wednesday, October 17th is Parent Visitation Day.
