Practice Makes PERFECT!!

Our week was filled with NJ ASK practice!  Third graders really need to learn exactly how the NJ ASK works, what the questions might look like, and building up stamina to write for a certain amount of time.  We continued to answer writing prompts and grading them based on the NJ ASK rubric.  The class also worked on math practice pages.  These pages look a lot different then Everyday Math pages.  It is necessary to expose third graders to the layout and form of the NJ ASK.  We also dived into poetry and thinking about how poetry works and what it looks like.  One of our discussions included visualizing the words that the poet used.

What did the poet mean when they wrote?
What does the picture look like in your head?

In science, we continue with our Structure of Life unit.  The class brainstormed questions we wanted to know the answer to about crayfish.  Students used the laptops to research these answers.  We then had a crayfish discussion.  The crayfish will be arriving in our classroom next week!

For social studies, we continued to discuss environmental problems.  We read about the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, as well as a school that was built on land that had toxic waste.  As a class, we discussed current environmental problems in our community.  The ideas included air pollution, littering at the fields, the Paulsboro train derailment, and water pollution.

DON'T FORGET...We are collecting toiletries for the military.  If you are out running errands this weekend, please consider picking something up.  Thank you!
