Sorry for the late update to last week!!!
Language Arts and Writing: This week we continued to discuss historical fiction and read another version of the story about the Triangle Shirtwaist Company. The kids then wrote their very own historical fiction stories about one of the girls or one of the bosses from the Company. The stories were then read and each one had to include at least five facts from that day the fire happened. We also continued to dive into our novels. The students focused on the main character, supporting character, and villan! I can't wait to see how the novels turn out!
Mrs. Miller also handed out a short Halloween poem that each child must memorize by October 31. Look in your child's folder for it if you haven't seen it yet.
Social Studies: We began discussing how citizens have a voice in their community. We chose a topic that was introduced in our book. The topic is to build something new in our community, a pool or a playground. The children chose one and discussed why they chose this side. Each small group had a representative stand up and say why they think a pool or playground should be built at our mini town hall meeting. The next step was to pick a candidate to represent each side. The candidates stood up and gave a little speech about why you should vote for them regarding the pool or playground.
In our classroom, we are going to also have an election. Five candidates were chosen. Each will give a speech (look for information to come home this week) and then we will narrow the candidates down to two. Those two will give another speech and then be voted on for our class president! We have been learning a little about the election process and watched a short video on each of the candidates running for president.
Science: We played a fun game to review our science vocabulary terms. Don't forget to study at home for our quiz on Thursday, October 25th.
